What your video gives away without you knowing
Metadata is information stored inside the file, outside the picture: where the video was shot, on which device, on what date and with which app. You never see it while watching, but it travels with the file whenever you send it.
What metadata a phone video carries
An iPhone video usually carries the GPS coordinates of where it was shot, accurate to a few meters, plus the exact device model, the iOS version and the recording date and time.
Android is similar. Editing apps such as CapCut, InShot and Premiere add their own name, version and sometimes project identifiers, which reveal how and by whom the video was made.
Why free methods don't solve it
The iPhone Photos app only lets you turn off location, and only for that share. Model, dates and software stay in the file. The Windows option to remove personal information reaches only a few fields and not the internal MOV and MP4 metadata.
Online metadata cleaners ask you to upload the video to their server, so you hand your location to a third party to hide it. Command-line tools need a computer and terminal skills, and still leave encoder markers inside the video.
Do WhatsApp, Instagram and TikTok strip metadata?
Sent as regular media, these platforms re-compress the file and lose quality. Sent as a document on WhatsApp, as a file on Telegram, by email, Google Drive or WeTransfer, the file arrives intact, with GPS, device and dates.
Rule of thumb: if the video leaves your phone as a file, clean it first.
